Everything Is Screen™

We need more tactile interactions.

I wish the world hadn't moved away from buttons, and knobs, and dials, and switches. I don't think "modernization" needs to be sticking everything behind a screen and simulating real-world touch sensations.

A physical control talks back. A knob has detents you can count. A switch has a position you can feel in the dark. A button gives a little, then gives way. You know it worked before you look, if you look.

I build stuff that lives behind screens for a living, so I'm part of the problem. UI has come a long way, and I'm not sure we can practically incorporate tactility into software outside of haptics, but I do hope we stop trying to erase it elsewhere. The people yearn for physical feedback.

In the meantime, I spent an afternoon building a little control panel with HTML & CSS. There's two knobs, a row of latching buttons, some momentary keys, and two sliders with lamps that glow brighter or fainter as they're moved.

It's not the real thing, but it's a reminder of what I miss.

Thanks for reading! & as always, happy coding!
